Bertiz, Natural Park and Baztan
We arrive at Donamariako Benta Hotel at around midday. Settled in, we go to the dining room and enjoy some mushroom crepes (boletus edulis), stewed pork jaw with orange spot and, for dessert, a piece of baked cheesecake with sweet pumpkin. It is accompanied by a Navarra Chardonnay, Nekeas, and followed by Sienta Bien house tea.
We then relax in our beautiful room. In the afternoon, we visit the town of Donamaria: its Carmelite convent, its Jauregia Tower, the windmill, we see young people play in the pelota court and descend to Doneztebe to have some wine and a small portion of omelette. We go for a stroll along the green path of the Tren Txikito towards Sumbilla and, as it is getting dark, we feel like a light dinner at our hotel.
On Saturday morning, we collect the sandwiches prepared for us, which are still piping hot and with an aroma of home-made loin and grilled cheese, our bottle of water and fruit and head off to the Bertiz Natural Park. We leave the car in the car park and “to discover the forest” plan to walk for perhaps 4 hours or reach the summit of Aizkolegui, which would take 5-6 hours. We have the whole day to enjoy the route. The whole day in the forest. A real luxury of silence and emotion.
We get to the hotel at about 6, have a shower, rest and in the little dining room next to the chimney fire, we have a beer. When we are hungry, a delicious dinner awaits us.
